Problem Description
A Magic Square is of order N is an NxN matrix containing the integers from1 to N2 arranged so that the sum of each row, column and the corner-to-corner diagonal are all equal. Write a program to create Magic Squares of odd order (1,3,5,7, etc.) up to order 51.
Background & Techniques
For small squares we could use the brute force approach as used in the 3x3 matrix in the rotating sums problem. But recall from earlier exercises that there are X! ways to arrange X numbers and 10! is approaching the upper limit that can be solved quickly (10! is about 3.6 million). This implies that finding the solution by brute force for an order 5 square would require trying up to 25! permutations of the numbers from 1 to 25. Clearly not a practical approach.
Like many puzzles of a mathematical bent, Magic Squares have been studied for hundreds of years. The algorithm used here for odd order Magic Squares was discovered at least 500 years ago. I'll leave it to the reader to search out the pertinent history.
There's the algorithm:
"Start with 1 in the middle of the top row; then go up and left assigning numbers in increasing order to empty cells; if you fall off of the square imagine the same square as tiling the plane and continue; if a cell is occupied, move down instead and continue."
From that statement, the implementation is straightforward. A couple of tricks are applied to the StringGrid used to display the results. The individual cell sizes are adjusted to contain the maximum values for a particular square. The font is set to size 8 if numbers greater than 100 need to be displayed and to size 12 for smaller squares. The C function is used to set the cell width and height for the maximum value at this font size. Finally the overall grid size is adjust to be just large enough to contain the cells (plus gridlines).
The program only has about 60 user coded statements, so we'll classify it as Beginners.

Pepper Boyz Catering
The purpose of this document is to describe a proposed new management and operations plan for PLANET CATERING (the Planet)
This initiation seeks the commitment of the Planet, M. Shane David and Key Staff. The plan while general at this time will support the needs of the Planet, M. Shane David and the existing key staff members. With many possible strategies and the real desire to culminate much individual experience, discussion, research and lobbying over the years by the Planet and M. Shane David, we propose to create in a team environment new goals and directions for the Planet. Within this plan lies a new corporate structure or joint venture arrangement having real ownership for the Planet, M. Shane David and Key Staff members.
The essence of the plan is in the personal standards of the management team, the quality of the staff we build, the procedures, the service standards and ultimately the client’s perception of the deliverables. The Plan is dedicated to developing staff through training and will do so in part by providing all operations, orientation, sanitation, recipe and procedural manuals. The benefits of such a plan include the efficient use of resources and a plan that is more apt to produce the desired results. The primary goal of the plan is to structure a program that both operates efficiently and generates enough sales to meet and exceed the corporation's goals.
With our mutual acceptance of this strategic plan and desire to produce a preliminary operations guide, a document will be drawn up that outlines in detail, the “Company” the exact time lines, operations schedules and including a memorandum of understanding.
Delivering world class whole natural food catering, products and entertainment services to clients primarily based in downtown Calgary is a realistic goal. In order to build the Planet into the profitable, market-oriented corporation it seeks to become, one of its most urgent needs is strong management planning and control coupled with a marketing program dedicated to sourcing new markets while delivering excellence of service to existing clienteles. A well thought out and documented plan that takes into account the state of the industry, the Planet’s current position in the industry, and the Planet’s goals.

Looking forward from September 2004, our vision is to become the leading Calgary catering organization. Our values are to conduct business with integrity, to develop staff through training, to provide our customers with top quality products and services leading to long term alliances with our clients and to mutual success and growth.
To do this, a strong, highly organized and efficient catering team must be in place when the marketing plan goes into action. A comprehensive plan requires looking at today's needs and those that are likely to develop in the near future as a result of more exposure and more sales. The long-range sales goals and sales team-operating plan should be considered so that strategies and internal systems will not become obsolete.
